Onions have many health benefits. Among all of them one of the most important is that onions are very good for the heart health. Lately, researchers have said that onions are very much like garlic when it comes to cardiovascular benefits. Quercetin is flavonoid or a plant based chemical (phytochemical), which is found in some vegetables and fruits. Quercetin is beneficial for humans and promotes good health. This phytochemical is responsible for the colors of Apples and Onions. Quercetin is also an antioxidant and plays an important role as anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory.
The onion is scientifically known as Allium cepa, popular for its aromatic flavour. Onions come from the plant which has hollow leaves and closely related of garlic. Onions have been cultivated from the ancient times and highly regarded by the Egyptians. The word onion comes from the Latin word unio which means "single" that reflects a single bulb producing plants. Onions come in different sizes and colours. Today onions are cultivated worldwide but the biggest producers of the onions are India, China, Australia, United States and Turkey.
